Filling Cavities

Last night, the kid had her first real filling. Complete with freezing. She had one a couple of years ago but it was really little. At the time the dentist told us it was because of weak enamel. A common issue with premature babies. Or so, he tells me.

This one was more substantial. It needed to be frozen. And, it was also not the result of poor brushing - it seems she has a couple of abnormal teeth which are super susceptible to cavities. The word deformed was used. And they're way in the back. Only one of the two "weird" teeth has a cavity but it is at the back of her mouth. This made it quite fun for the dentist to try and fill.

What should have taken 20 minutes turned into a hour. Why? Because the kid is a drama queen. The dentist, not our regular one, told the kid to raise her hand if she wanted the dentist to stop. I swear the kid's hand was raised the entire time. Eventually, the dentist told her that she HAD to finish so she couldn't keep raising her hand.

And yet, the kid was still given a treasure from the treasure box. Did I mention she even got to watch television during the event? And Mommy was with her the entire time? Life is rough when you're six.

For reals?

While I was in Calgary, the hubby found a mouse in the house. Actually it ran across the stove while he was cooking. Did I mention we have two cats? There is no mouse evidence. We checked the cupboards, etc... no mouse.

Since Hubby was the only one to see it I wondered if the mouse was actually a figment.

On an unrelated note, our dishwasher started leaking - again! We had a problem with the hose in September. It leaked. The repair man thought a mouse had eaten through it. We thought he was nuts.

So, it seems we do have a mouse. A mouse that lives under the dishwasher chewing through the pipe. I have no idea what it eats or where it poops. Seriously, I can't see any evidence of its existence other than our poor, mutilated dishwasher.

Scary Cat

The cute, nice cat has been taking lessons from her scary, evil sister. Sort of. She isn't trying to claw anyone to death but she scared the heck out of me the other night. We were fast asleep and all of a sudden I woke up. To find a fuzzy creature staring at me. Scared the heck out of me! And yes, it was just Sera. I swear she willed me awake so that she could harass me for cuddles.

Is it any wonder that I also woke up sneezing several times.

Note to my family

For Mothers Day I do NOT want a wand.

The Kid is obsessed with Harry Potter and I just know that she is going to try and convince her father to buy me a wand for Mothers Day. However, the Webkinz a few years ago turned out okay so...

But, seriously. One $30 stick of resin masquerading as wood per family. That's my rule.

Barbie is my hero

Well, not really but I am laughing my arse off at this blog Barbie Bitchuates.

Someone is having a lot of fun with their old Barbies. Although I recognize Ken from A Fashion Fairytale so they might be their kids dolls. It's sad that I know what collection the various dolls belong to. Ah, I have a 6-year-old. That should be a valid excuse!

Favourite thing...

Most nights the kid ends up asking us lots of questions. Sometimes they are silly and sometimes they are insightful. The other night she added a twist.

"Mommy, do you have any questions to ask me before I ask you questions?"

I thought about it and then I asked her, "what is your favourite thing in the whole world."

"That's a hard one," she said and thought for a minute. "The whole world! That is my favourite things. I love the earth and the flowers and the dirt and the whole planet."

Not hard to believe that Earth Day was a couple of days ago, is it? She sucks it all up like a sponge. Which is probably a good thing. Until she starts saving garbage to turn into "art".

Happy Easter

Hope the bunny was good to you! The Kid did well. Although since she is in on the secret it seemed a little pointless this year.

100 days of hell...

The kid celebrated 100 days of school back in January. It is almost May - so that was way more than 100 days ago. And we still have to listen to her talk about the experience. From what I can gather the highlight of the day was that all the kids got 100 snacks.

It sounds impressive until you find out what constituted a snack. Each kid got 10 chocolate chips. And they got to choose 90 other items (10 sets of 10). Such as mini marshmallows, cheerios and pretzels.

She didn't even eat them all. Most of them were thrown in her knapsack. When I found them they were disposed of. And yet, it seems to have been the highlight of her year so far.

My secret obsession...

I am ashamed to admit it - well not really because then I wouldn't post about it - but for the last couple of years I have frequently found myself... playing Webkinz.

I know!

Kid got one a few years ago but she couldn't read well enough to play the games. Luckily Webkinz Junior came out soon after. That she could handle. So I started playing the Webkinz games to earn the kid money. You know, for when she eventually could play Webkinz. That time came sooner than I expected. And she was thrilled to discover all her cash. She can earn her own money now. And yet I still log on to play the funny games - which are basically reincarnations of old school games like Pac Man, Frogger and Bejeweled.

And kid just keeps spending the money I earn.

An excuse for being a klutz

Not my actual shoe. I may be oblivious but I'm not that bad!
I've always been a klutz. I seriously walk in to walls and trip up stairs. I also bruise easily. Really easily. I just figure it is who I am and I'm okay with being me.

Recently I started tripping over my feet all the time. I shrugged it off since I am an admitted klutz.

Today I discovered that my favourite pair of black work shoes were broken. One shoe has lost a chunk of its heel. Yup. And probably had been for a couple of weeks. All of a sudden my constant tripping makes sense. It was my shoes! Off to the shoe doctor!

I can tell when a pantone colour is a shade off but it takes me weeks (if not months) to catch on that my shoes are uneven. Oh boy!

Just saying...

When one member of the household has Crohn's Disease - leaving a couple of squares of toilet paper on the roll is the same as leaving an empty roll.

I'm just saying... thank goodness it was #1.

Umm, we're muggles...

The kid has been working her way through the Harry Potter series for the last month. She's almost done the third book. We've let her watch several of the movies in preparation for our trip to Universal Studios next month.

Alas, it turns out there is a down side to having a good reader. At this very moment she is lying in her bed practicing spells. Yes. I did type that. She has plans to purchase a wand, owl and a book of spells at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter gift store.

I reminded her that she is a muggle. I asked if she would be disappointed when her spells don't work. She will be, just a little bit, she claims.

And here I was nervous about her 11th birthday and the absence of the Hogwarts acceptance letter.

Poor Kid

She is totally Cinderella and I am the evil not-step mother.

For the last 30-minutes she has been trying to put her clean laundry away. The laundry I cleaned for her. Alas, my highly intelligent daughter decided to hang up socks and underwear.

Did I mention there is a dedicated underwear drawer? There is also an underwear drawer. Heck, there is a drawer for all bottoms AND a separate drawer for all tops. And there is a cupboard for all her jammies. There is even a misc. drawer for things like bathing suits.

I'm pretty sure she is sulking her room lamenting her evil, unreasonable mother. I figured it was time for her to discover there isn't a laundry fairy.

I'm back

I'm back from my fun trip to Calgary! The two hour time change actually pulled a number on me! Although that may have been more a case of me using too much brain power! I can't believe all the information I have to digest.

It was actually lovely when we arrived. The weather was above freezing and it was quite pleasant to walk around for the next few days. Most of my coworkers flew home on Wednesday. That was probably a good call because it snowed that night! Lots and lots of snow. My guess is this was the Universe making up for the snowstorm I missed while I was in Texas. Although I didn't have to go outside so - ha ha ha!

Smart Kid

The kid just lost her third tooth,. Smart kid. I was afraid that she was going to loose it when I was away. That would have put Daddy in charge of the Tooth Fairy loot. Which might not be as generous as the Mummy Tooth Fairy.

And I'm pretty sure that is why she pulled her tooth out tonight while we were watching our Family Movie.

Revenge

Last month the kid and I escaped the Ontario chill and went to Texas. The weather was gorgeous. When we came home, the weather was still a little crummy but it has improved significantly. In fact, Toronto and Dallas both had temperatures of 18 this week!

I've heard that the temperature will be a lovely 20 on Sunday. Nice, right? But I fly to Calgary on Sunday. It's only going to be 11 there. Boo.

Although, 11 isn't anything to sneeze at. Way better than a snowstorm!

Bedtime Delays

The Kid: "Mommy, I have a question for you. How was the earth started?"

Yeah, she knew she was opening a big can of worms with that question. We're pretty open about various beliefs and admit that we don't know the answer to everything. I guess it shouldn't be shocking that the six-year-old tries to start philosophical debates when it is bedtime.

Bored

The kid is a wee bit constipated.

She finds this very boring.

"I wish there was something to do!!!!"

This is why Archie comics were invented.

The Super Bowl

When the kid and I were in Texas- specifically the DFW area - we bought her father a couple of Super Bowl shirts. Why not? They were 60% or 70% off and he is a fan of football.

Today he wore one and the kid exclaimed, "Daddy you're wearing your Super Bowl shirt! What's a Super Bowl? Does Poppa (her great-grandfather) play in the Super Bowl?"

It seems she thinks the Super Bowl involves bowling instead of football. Ah well, you live and you learn.

Bring on the clowns

We spent quite a bit of our Texan trip wondering around Sephora and Ulta! Why? Not because my sister and I were desperate for make-up. But it offered a great entertainment option for the kid. And if I had to buy a few things.... who can argue.

Everything is bigger in Texas

Like Nerds! Way bigger!

 And boxes of gummy candy!

  And insane, giant gummy bears!

And you should all be super proud of me. I actually didn't buy anything. Although the temptation to stock up on photo props was pretty powerful!

Movie Tavern!

When we were in Texas we went and saw Mars Needs Moms. But that wasn't the best part. This theatre was also a restaurant! They converted an old movie theatre and made it super awesome! How? By doing this:
  • Tiered or stadium seating in all auditoriums, including executive high-back leather rocker chairs.
  • A menu consisting of dozens of chef-prepared chicken, chopped salads, appetizers, hand-tossed pizzas, signature sandwiches, black angus burgers, and delectable desserts.
  • Tables in front of all theatre seats.
  • Full-service bar and lounge.
  • Food and drink orders taken and delivered at your seat in each auditorium.
Each seat has a button in front of it. Want a refill of your Coke? Just press your button and the wait staff is there!

Even better - the movie cost LESS than a traditional theatre! And those Coke refills - free!

It's like tic tac toe - on crack!

The kid received a board game from her great aunt for Christmas. Because we are slackers, we only recently cracked it open.

Oops.

It is awesome! The name of the game is Gobblet Junior! According to their website,
Gobblet Junior plays just like Tic-Tac-Toe except that you can gobble up your opponent and move your pieces around the board. Be the first to line up three pieces in a row and you win ! Fun, Strategy, Memory and Surprise are always part of the game.
It's awesome! Way more fun than real tic tac toe!
